Is it possible to have completely free internet access or access to the phone line?
Alright, guys. This one may come off a bit confusing and probably illegal if you are getting the jist of what I’m asking…

Is there a way to get free internet connection/ phone service.

I don’t know all of my terms, so a "phone service" may have nothing to do with the network, but what I’m asking is…who owns the internet? who owns the network? It’s just empty space until people begin placing their market into the frontier, like buying land, right? So what would it take to rig your own little backdoor into the network of either the phone line or the internet (I’m pretty oblivious as to how the two connect with each other)?

I’m aware of all the "cheaper" options, and I know that this may come off as illegal…but is it illegal to make your own fuel in your back yard? Is it illegal to set up a tesla coil and generate your own energy?

Give me some explanations…I’m lost…and curious…think of the money I could save xD
Hmm…So if I knew how to set myself up, I could use the network generally for free? Other service providers can contact each other, like Verizon to AT&T, and different internet service providers all connect to the same internet…so is there some kind of specific thing I must master in order to set up my own uhm…would you call it a network? or something else…

    Since you like analogies.

You can make your own energy, but you can’t tap to the power lines to get free power.

You can have your own well, but you can’t tap to the public water supply.

You can have your own free home network, but you can’t tap to someone else’s broadband pipe to get free Internet access.

In some areas it’s possible to tap in legally for free.

If you already have a phone, NetZero offers free dialup access for up to 10 hours per month. You can use it all in one shot or just a few minutes at a time by opening several pages and then logging off while you take your time reading them. While logged on part of your page will have an ad banner.

Many towns and some businesses offer free public access via WiFi in certain areas. If you live near enough to an access point to get a good signal you’re in. I don’t see any reason why a VOIP device like the Magic Jack couldn’t be used to get phone service at minimal cost.

The cost wouldn’t be tapping into the "public" part of the network, if there is actually such a thing, but bringing that connection to where you want to use it.

That would require leasing lines from the telephone company, running fiber optics and necessary repeaters, or some for of wireless or satellite, all of which would require you make an investment in equipment and "rental" or licensing of infrastructure or spectrum. And you’d have to work with dozens of people and organizations (some public, some private) to hunt down problems if something goes wrong.

For that to pay, you ought to have a heck of a business plan, and time to mess with the problems..

For your own home use, it is just simpler and more cost effective to pay the phone company what amounts to rental of the infrastructure they already installed, and to pay their people to handle network problems plus all the people upstream of the network.
