Millions of individuals are searching the internet daily, searching for a legitimate home business. During their search, they get hounded with web sites stating how easy it is to make money with a home business. These sites are usually selling affiliate programs.

For those individuals, unfamiliar with affiliate marketing, it can seem like the “old pyramid” system. While there are some similarities, there are also major differences.

The pyramid system was based on one individual, at the top selling to others below them. Those people in turn sold to people below them. So on and so on. The person at the top of the pyramid capitalized on the money made from those at the base of the pyramid. Very few pyamid systems worked and very few were profitable. Pyramid systems, usually involved selling door to door, to family or friends. During the sale, part of the pitch was to recruit the purchaser to also start selling.

With the invention of the computer and the advent of the internet, selling door to door became obsolete. Now, an individual or a corporation can sell or buy over the World Wide Web. As computers became more accessible and the use of the internet became more common place, the use of these tools by marketers also became more prevalent.

As the internet grows, affiliate marketers are on the front lines of this growth. As technology grows and trends change, so does the affiliate marketer. If an individual wants to earn any kind of income, he has to be on the cutting edge of technology.

So, while affiliate marketers may seem like the “Amway Man” or the “Fuller Brush Man”, there is a huge difference. Affiliate marketers, may work from home but there are working on a global scale. Affiliate marketing is not a pyramid system, but a teamwork solution to making money on line.

Instead of driving door to door and selling, affiliate marketers are utilizing online marketing to drive traffic or customers to other websites. This type of marketing plays a huge role in e-commerce.

Within the category of affiliate marketing are various subtypes, such as affiliate networks, management companies, specialized marketing and of course publishing.

In a nutshell, affiliate marketing is receiving a commission or money for referring a customer or business to another person or business. Sounds simple, right? Wrong!

It’s not as easy as it sounds. It is a business and must be treated as such. That’s why most affiliate programs fail. Those new to affiliate marketing don’t have the training or the support they need to utilize the internet or the computer to their best advantage. There are companies that have researched and found proven methods of making money from home. They also provide the training and support that those new to affiliate marketing need. The key is knowing which companies will provide this information without breaking your budget.

Individuals, looking to start a home business must be vigilant in which program they sign with. As with all businesses, there are unscrupulous programs which use false advertising, forced clicks, spam and other methods to get unsuspecting individuals to their website or their sponsor’s website. A legitimate affiliate programs will have an anti spam policy in their terms of agreement. They will also provide a way to “opt out” of their directory.

Home based businesses are growing at an astounding rate. Historically, web based businesses have been able to withstand the down swing of most traditional businesses. The key is research, diligence and asking questions prior to signing up for anything.

Affiliate Marketing is not a course that is taught in universities. There are few training seminars that result in certifications. Most affiliates use the “learn and earn” or the “trial and error” system. Affiliate marketers are on the frontier or cutting edge of commerce on the internet, education is extremely important, due to the ever changing technology.

Individuals, interested in affiliate marketing, when researching possibilities should inquire about training from their potential affiliate managers. Training should be easily accessible by video, email, downloads and other types of tutorials. Be careful with “Free Offers”, these can lead to disaster.

Individuals can and do make money online, everyday. Affiliate marketing is one way that people are building wealth, while working from home.

An easy way to start off would be to buy stuff from a charity shop and sell them for more than you bought them for. It’s an easy way to learn too!

E-Bay is a good place. I have a resume writing service and make extra money typing people’s resumes. Also, I see stuff too. I think you can go into E-bay "Help" and see if there is a way you can work for them. Good Luck.

It is always better to be prepared than jumping into the water without learning how to swim.

There are a number of ways to do it and a lot of programs that claim to help get you started. The important thing is to get an honest review in advance of buying anything that claims it will help you. One of the most interesting things I have heard about is flipping websites. You can read about that and how to make money from it at the site I listed below. Good luck to you!
